PRODUCT & CERTIFICATIONS
Linen is one of the most sustainable and high-performing textiles in the world. It’s biodegradable, breathable, moisture-wicking, and naturally antibacterial. It uses far fewer resources than cotton and lasts much longer—while offering unmatched comfort year-round.
Learn more: The Many Benefits of Organic Linen Bedding – For You and the Planet
It’s a common misconception, but no—in fact, you might be surprised how soft and welcoming high quality European linen bedding feels.
While linen does start with a more textured feel than cotton, it softens beautifully over time. And at The Modern Dane, we use only the finest-quality organic flax linen, woven in Portugal and garment-washed for softness before it even reaches your home. This pre-washing process breaks in the fibers, so your bedding arrives already soft—and it continues to become more supple over time.
Unlike mass-market linens that may feel stiff or coarse, ours retains its strength while developing a velvety texture that many customers describe as their most comfortable bedding yet.

We exclusively use organic European flax that is grown in the so-called "flax belt"—an area that runs through France, Belgium, and The Netherlands that is the native habitat for flax and provides the ideal conditions for growing high quality, sustainable flax for linen.
Learn more: Where Is the Best Flax for Linen Grown?
Our bedding is made from 100% certified organic linen, woven from flax grown exclusively in Belgium and France. This region is considered the gold standard for flax farming due to its ideal climate and centuries-old expertise. The linen is then spun, woven, and hand-sewn in Portugal—renowned for its textile craftsmanship and ethical manufacturing practices. The result is a fabric that’s soft, breathable, durable, and naturally beautiful.

We use only non-toxic, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified dyes. This means every color you see on our bedding is rigorously tested and guaranteed to be free from harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and irritants. Our dyes are safe for sensitive skin and meet the strictest global standards for textile safety—so you can rest easy, knowing that beauty and health go hand in hand.
Yes! Our Naturlig collection is made without added dyes. Instead, it highlights the natural beauty of flax by using undyed natural linen in the warp and white linen in the weft. The result is a subtle, sophisticated fabric with a soft, organic character—and zero chemical coloration.
Because this fabric is unbleached and undyed, you may notice subtle variations in color from batch to batch the unique character of each flax harvest. We work closely with our mill to ensure consistency, but a touch of variation is part of the charm of truly raw linen.
Absolutely. All our products are GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. This is an independent and stringent testing protocol that covers the entire supply chain from harvesting to manufacturing ensuring that the end product is fully organic and that socially responsible labor and processing practices are utilized throughout.
Learn more: What Do the OEKO-TEX, European Flax, and GOTS Certificates Mean?
Our products carry three key certifications:
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) ensures our linen is organically grown and processed without harmful chemicals, from seed to finished product, under strict environmental and labor standards.
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class 1 certifies that our fabric is safe for even the most sensitive skin, including babies, and is free from harmful substances.
- Master of Flax Fibre (formerly European Flax) guarantees that all our flax is grown in Belgium and France with no artificial irrigation, GMO-free farming, and complete traceability.
These certifications reflect our commitment to health, quality, and sustainability at every step.
Learn more: What Do the OEKO-TEX, European Flax, and GOTS Certificates Mean?
Linen and cotton are both natural fibers, but linen is stronger, more breathable, and more eco-friendly. Flax (the plant linen is made from) requires less water and fewer pesticides than cotton. Linen naturally regulates temperature, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. While cotton starts soft and wears out, linen starts crisp and softens beautifully with age.
Learn more: What Is the Difference Between Linen and Cotton?
All of our products are made with a 165 GSM (grams per square meter) linen textile, which we have found to strike just the right balance between durability and comfort and which also lends itself well to a year-round bedding fabric.

Care & Durability
Wash your linen bedding in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild, liquid detergent. Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, or optical brighteners, which can weaken the fibers. Tumble dry on low or hang to dry for best results. Linen naturally softens over time, so there's no need to add anything extra—just wash and enjoy.
Learn more: How to Wash and Take Care of Linen Bedding to Extend Its Lifespan
Choose plant-based, enzyme-free detergents like Dropps Unscented, Seventh Generation Free & Clear, ECOS Hypoallergenic, or Tru Earth Laundry Strips. Enzyme-heavy formulas like Woolite can break down linen fibers over time, shortening their lifespan. Gentle, eco-conscious detergents help your bedding stay strong, soft, and beautiful for years.
Learn more: How to Wash and Take Care of Linen Bedding to Extend Its Lifespan
Absolutely—it's all part of the magic! Linen naturally softens with each wash, developing a relaxed, lived-in texture without losing strength.
Learn more: Does Linen Get Softer?
Very much so—linen is a durable, breathable fabric that handles pet claws and fur well. Its natural texture hides minor snags and sheds hair more easily than smoother fabrics. Plus, it’s hypoallergenic and easy to wash, making it a smart choice for households with pets.

With regular use and proper care, fitted sheets typically last 2–3 years. Flat sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers often last even longer. Rotating between sets and washing gently helps maximize their lifespan.
